Wilmington, Del. —
Students and parents are demanding that Ronald Russo remain president of the highly successful Charter School of Wilmington.
Many of the more than 300 that attended the July 22 Charter School Board of Directors meeting credited Russo – at the helm since the school’s inception 13 years ago – with creating an oasis for learning and excellence, free from disciplinary distractions and the mediocrity plaguing traditional public schools today.
They demanded answers from the Board of Directors, and getting none, expressed disappointment for being kept in the dark regarding rumors of a pending decision to reassign Russo to another position.
Throughout the meetings, which included two extensions of a 45-minute public comment period, Board Chairman Raymond Seigfried repeatedly said that the Board would not comment on personnel issues, which are reserved for closed door, executive sessions.
“We have not made any decisions,” Seigfried said. “I ask all of you to keep an open mind. Don’t rush to judgment. This will not be a two-way communication, but we want to hear what you have to say.”
Recent graduate Ben Wallace of Hockessin said the controversy endangers Charter’s success.“If you get rid of this man, you’re getting rid of a leader who made this school what it is,” said Wallace, who will attend the University of Virginia. Newark resident Chris Moore, a 2006 graduate, agreed, saying the rumors and innuendo caused by the Board’s pending decision had hurt his alma mater. “Just like a rumor crashed Bear Stearns, imagine what a rumor could do to a tiny organization like this,” said Moore, a finance major at the University of Delaware, referring to the recent failure of a prominent financial firm.
Russo said little at the meeting. He described himself as an educator with 41 years experience, including 13 at Charter. “I am proud to say I am the very first employee hired at Charter,” he said, drawing a thunderous ovation.
Parent Rick Walsh credited Charter’s academic success to Russo. “It’s unconventional and we have an unconventional leader,” said Walsh, of Brandywine Hundred. “But don’t mess with success. The establishment wants to protect the failing status quo. I live in the Brandywine School District where they regularly ask for higher taxes but its enrollment is declining because they don’t want to challenge the status quo.”Pike Creek resident David Giattino, a 2004 graduate, said it appears the Board has forgotten who its shareholders are.“The students are the real stakeholders. And parents and guardians represent those shareholders,” said Giattino, a University of Delaware graduate. “If you remove Mr. Russo, there will be repercussions and there will a movement to reorganize this Board. I don’t want to see my diploma devalued by this Board.” Greater than 95 percent of Charter students perennially meet or exceed English and mathematics standards as measured by the Delaware Student Testing Program each year. PTA President Teri Tabah, who’s had three children graduate from Charter, said Russo was the man who had the foresight to create this school, where “every child is entitled to a free and appropriate education.” “The Board needs to be reminded of that,” she said. “I cannot say that the Board has acted improperly but there is an appearance of impropriety.” Russo said the public comment showed that people seem to be satisfied with his performance.
"It seems as though they [parents and students at the meeting] are looking for stability. If changes are needed, we need time to look at it."

Wow, wouldn't it be nice if all parents and students showed that kind of enthusiasm.
The outpouring of support for Ron Russo has been amazing. Too bad this is now a legal issue.
This is a good article.
Legal issue, I heard it was a "sexual harrasment" issue??? And sorry, I was never impressed with the man, a definate middlebrow, and never impressed with many of the students at CSW.
DSTP scores and getting into IVY league schools does not make a moral and ethical and GREEN and sustainable lifestyle Amerikan. Most of those CSW kids are technophile creeps, onward into the Brave New World!!!!
I hope you can back up what you "heard" anonymous. Are you sure you want to go there based on hear-say?
Whatever. Russo, the clown leader of the technophile clone CSW kids, can sue my butt for all I am worth, absolutely NOTHING. I never liked the man, never respected his intellect or level of consciousness. And as I said, I don't respect most of the clone products he cranked out or the teachers he hired. At that wacko Catholic school St Marks or CSW....whatever!!!!!
I hope you know some CSW kids who aren't technophile creeps read your comment.
Get serious. Support your allegations or let it go.
Maybe this joker had a kid who couldn't get in or didn't get in to Charter. Or, maybe a kid who was booted from Charter or St. Marks. Respond to that crackpot.
Antonio Prado wrote a great article. It is true that Russo is popular. The support he has gotten is huge. If someone does not like him there must be a reason.
Whatever isn't good enough.
I guess this jerk has nothing more to say. We're waiting...
Too funny, nope, no kids that I know of : )........just am a highly educated individual, a very well rounded liberal arts AND science education......listen, I cut him a break by calling him middlebrow.....the man is a LOWBROW propped up by a bunch of sketchy Corporations. MBNAs business practices sure are a model for our youth!!!!
I agree with the sketchy corporations comment and do not like that they are involved with a school that is so popular, but what did this guy do so wrong?
He's a yellow running dog lowbrow lackey of those corporations. And his vision and theirs has created a society(Amerika) that comprises 5% of world popuplation and consumes 25% of worlds oil......duh!!!
......and Chad Holloway ??? CEO of the DuPont company sure has done a good job running that company into the ground as he lined his pockets. Another great role model for the technophile CSW kids!!!!
Whatever- Your comments show how much some people care about the students of today when they use such malicious words against students who excel in all areas of school, not just one or two. Think of these students, reading you comments, and how they feel about their perception in the eyes of their community. I also agree, Antonio Prado did an excellent article. I'm glad to see a local news source covering this issue in depth.
Interesting point. Do kids really read this (and other) blogs?
Pandora, I don't get the point.......the sooner bright kids wake up to how the world really works, the better.........become Philosopher Kings ye CSW clones, cast out the greedy moneylenders and defilers of Mother Earth.....start with Russo, HA!
Perhaps I should have said... Interesting question.
Do kids really read adult blogs?
And while intelligence can lead to success... it doesn't guarantee it. (Geez, that sounded like a fortune cookie!)
well, one CSW student said they were reading it.....What are you doing up so late, Pandora

What about the kids that views local news and all the political mud slinging?
He we go again “it’s about the kids” to scapegoat to try to sensor other’s opinions.
Also district trolls like yourself comes in with this crap but yet you support all the illegal school board votes.
As far as CSW board remember they are a puppet of Red Clay remember “ CSW is a Red Clay school” Maybe these parents need to come to a Red Clay school board meeting and raise hell. The CSW charter is just about up for renewal. Ask Red Clay board for help and you’ll see them say they have no legal authority.
How about when we protest the Red Clay board does it really matter! Did we get real financial transparency?
Yea think of the public school student when Bill Lee and Copeland pretty much call their teachers losers or how they stick up for successful white kids as charters are the save all as black charter schools are failing.

Sorry but this is BS. CSW has had their way with Red Clay from day one. If they survive the internal crisis I think think they will continue to have there way.
Let's stop feeding the troll.

CSW will survive and concerned parents need to relax! However, the average CSW parents who rely on other parents to be involved within the school need to get up off their butts. Otherwise they will have serious problem like Red Clay did and does! CSW board is appointed members not elected like ours and CSW parents don’t have any say. AS you can see CSW board member represent many of the corporate sponsor. Bitch at them and no $$$$$.
Ron Russo is a great caring guy and I think it’s a mistake to have him leave. BTW he didn’t leave St. Marks to start CSW he was asked to leave St. Mark with no reasoning given to the parents or community. Ron will do well and is very marketable and I would love to see him at a lower performing charter school. Perhaps his wonderful people skills can reach parents of lower performing student so that they can engage in their child’s education.
The only thing CSW board is obligated to do is honor Ron’s existing contract and if the want to demote him in the middle of that contract even with same pay its breach of contract. As best they would be required to buy out his contract. I do see a sense of liable issues because such demotion is sending mixed messages to the community that Ron is incompetent in performing duties.
All you charter parents relax and hang in there but get more involved go to board meeting all the time not just when there is a crisis. If you were there in the past you may have seen this crisis coming and could have had a better impact before the fact rather then after the fact. CSW is a great school and my concerns with charter issues are not about CSW, it’s about the low-hand politics drive charter schools even CSW. CSW is not a private institute is a public funded public schools and I am tell you all with 24% of charter schools failing the top will come down. We can’t have a charter schools system that mirrors what we have. I left the Republican Party as chairperson of the 19th Representative District and State Committee Member because what I see going on with charter is not good, there is an ugly agenda. I was right about DSTP as far back as 1997. Our caring legislators who have their hands too involved in charter schools are they same dam people who are failing to bring simple things like school finance reform such as allowing parents and taxpayer to see line item expenditures. Do you real want the same legislators building new schools when they are walking away from existing schools? When I gave Copeland reasonable proof than Red Clay wasn’t being honest and brought to his attention the violation Red Clay made in that last charter vote he told me it was a local issue out of his control! Isn’t that a crock! I like Bill Lee but not when Copeland is tied $$$$ to Lee.
Hey Laz, you closet drunk, go back and spit your hate with your buddy Kilroy. You said it yourself, your worth absolutely nothing. You little man. People, he is good for a few laughs.

cut me a break Kilroy....the Charter kids are the "best and the Brightest " skimmed from all the schools far and wide. Your senile great grandmother could run CSW with the same results, probably better.
NO REASON GIVEN at St MARKS and a legal issue at CSW.....in a dream within a dream I had the other night.....IT was writ large, called at a minimum ALLEGED SEXUAL HARRASSMENT.......lets do like the POPE and send him to another parrish( school) and let him do his deeds again and again and again!!!!!
Laz, you drunk moron let it go !!
Let's hope these rumors are false. Until there is proof it is time to let this go.
right on, cool, I'm chilled
Ron Russo is like a father to some students. He gives them suppor t and guidance. If there is talk about anything inappropriate, the students know about it. They know what goes on better than anyone. These are high school students. I would not worry about watching what you say here because of them. What is said her is nothing they have not heard before.
Are these people the most stupid, trusting people ever? Legal is involved! They are trying to change his position! Sexual Harrassment policies suddenly created! ARE PEOPLE THIS DUMB? I think some people need to think that Russo is a man and people make mistakes. How these smart kids see him in school may not be the whole man. He obviously did something wrong and now is trying to save his job. How can people back him when they are unsure what he did?
"He obviously did something wrong and now is trying to save his job. How can people back him when they are unsure what he did?"
Ahh, the new american way, you are guilty until you prove your innocence.
Just heard that the parents are planning a rally this tuesday at a special charter board meeting at 5:30pm. This meeting I am sure is to announce Mr. Russo's replacement. Wow that would really send the community into a tailspin.Personnaly, I want to know all the facts but who really cares. He has run a topnotch school with proven results. He is doing something right. I know for a fact that administration all throughout Red Clay screws around on their spouses.if they are doing their jobs who cares!!! I think this a personality conflict between the board president, R. Seigfried and Mr. Russo. Come see all the support Russo gets on Tuesday. It will knock your socks off!!!!
So let me get this straight, if he did something wrong, if he sexually harrassed someone, that is okay as long as he has a top ranked school? Really? Wow, he can do anything. Must be nice to be a god.
