School Calendar

Do you miss the calendar Red Clay used to give out, the regular wall calendar with many of the important dates such as early dismissals, days off, vacations, end of marking periods, conference days, testing days, report card distribution days and choice open houses already on it? Parents who were used to hanging that calendar up and using it for everything during the school year have said they feel lost without it. One mother, who was used to relying on that calendar, felt horrible last Tuesday, Election Day, when her daughter got up and went to the bus stop to wait for a bus that never came. Hopefully that did not happen to anyone today.

Yes I do miss that calendar. I am one of the people who is lost without it. The list of dates in the back of the code of conduct or student handbook-i cant remember which, does not compare. Why didn't the do it the old way this year, money? I did not know report cards were coming home last friday, luckily my kids weren't trying to hide anything and handed them to me when I got home that night.

That mother, and father too, should feel horrible. How hectic can your life be that you don't know when your children have a day off?

Naturally the school is to blame.

As a school employee, I too miss the old wall calendar. I used to have one hanging in my kitchen so that I could make dr. appts, etc. on the days when school is not in session.

It was also incredibly helpful to have the calendar hanging by my desk at school to answer parent questions!

I have to say, though, that even when the calendars were distributed, many parents still did not use them.

OMG! The post already said the mother felt horrible. It did not say she "blamed" the school. Where are you getting that? What is your problem?

Red clay is a terrible district because they did not spend the money to print these calendars. How dare they shortchange the students of Red Clay!

Ooops. I mean, how dare they spend any money that is not required by state or federal law. They are too wasteful and that is why there was a meltdown. They need more cuts to reign in spending. Spending is out of control. Cut all spending that does not directly impact the clasroom.

Sorry. All of my multiple personalities are coming out today. Damn that Bob A. It is all his fault. Bob A. for Secretary of Education!

Every inservice day or day off like today and last Tuesday and every time there is an early dismissal there are parents who for whatever reason did not know. They drive to school to find out it is closed or send kids to the bus stop who wonder why the bus is not coming, or they do not know they need to pick up early for an early dismissal. It happens and parents feel bad when it does, but it doesnt make them bad parents

It is hard to keep track of everything. I agree that calendar made it easier. Our elementary school sends home a monthly calendar which really helps and we appreciate it. To the mom who did not know school was closed on election day, don't feel bad, there were kids at the bus stop in our neighborhood too.

Boy you are nasty. Not having that calendar was big deal to some people. Obviously fix red clay picked up on that and wanted to know how many people miss having that calendar.

To anonymous - Who sends the monthly calendar home the school or the PTO/PTA?

Hey girls today was a good day to bring this up. I saw kids at the bus stop as I was leaving for work and am pretty sure they were Red Clay students. I will have to ask my wife to be sure.

If you aren't sure about days off, go to the district website and print out the calendar. The days off are also listed on the lunch calendars

I think the calendar we get from our elementary must be from the parent group, it has their events on it and fundraiser things.

Yes. Yes. Yes. I would not care what the calendar was made of--cheap paper is fine--no graphics is fine, but we have been lost without this calendar at home and at school. Couldn't they create a calendar in calendar format that showed the main dates and events, like the old one did, that we could print from the website? A list is not a calendar!!!!!!!!!

Cranky, Mean Anonymous: There is no rule in the world of blogs that says that you have to say something nasty on every post or the blog fairy will come to your house and put soot up your nose. Knock it off. Either respond to the post itself or keep your mean thoughts to yourself. Get a life.

The calendar they printed in the past cost them $20,000. Twenty thousand dollars. 20K! That is a huge amount of money for a calendar for every family. However, the calendars do not have to be on fancy shiny paper with color photos and school district hoopla. They do not have to be folded and stapled. They can just be run front and back on 6-8 sheets of paper and stapled in the corner.

Red Clay, please bring back the old calendar, it can be on copy paper for all I care. It was sooooooo convenient.

Why don't the Band Boosters or some group make up a Red Clay calendar as a fundraiser? I bet alot of us would buy one. I work at a doctor's office, and used to use the calendar there when patients had to make appointments, and didn't know what week was what in school. I used to keep about 4 different school district calendars. Now it's a pain--people have to check and call back. That, or get your business people in the area to underwrite the calendar with their advertising.
